Well, as it turns out I am an avid fan of The Greenwood Cemetery, the antiquity, the architecture and the grounds make it a peaceful and comfortable place for a daytime stroll, or afternoon meditation around the lake.
Saturday night my husband and I attended INTO THE VEIL, an event hosted by The Greenwood Historic Fund (a not for profit) and a great organization all donations are tax deductible.
There must have been over 200 people walking through this gorgeous masterpiece of a cemetery after dark. Its 478 acres of lush trees and shrubs, hills and paths (usually closed by 5pm) made this a real treat. Geared with flashlights and comfortable shoes, we were free to roam about the grounds and take in the crisp night air amidst many guests that were dressed par for the course.
Candlelit stairs and open mausoleums allowed for this to be a very 1800’s experience. Being able to enter these final resting places and see the amazing mosaic ceilings and marble abound dating back to the 1800’s truly makes an impact.
As you stroll along small dark paths you came across an accordion player under a tree, a band of sandbag players standing atop a mausoleum and opera being sung in a canoe on the lake accompanied by a paper lantern lit dance along the lake side. Cash bars abound and easily found via map or music in the distance. Each bar stand had a host of drinks from wine, beer, water and punch bowls laced with scotch or tequila, you were free to pick your poison!
This was a joy to visit after dark and I look forward to the Catacomb tours in July 2016.
There is something for everyone, everyone that is an aficionado of fabulous architecture, history and grave sites! Here is the link to this event and their calendar! Hope to see you at a future event 🙂
